Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett announces first-ever solo release

Kirk Hammett plans to release a four-song instrumental EP called “Portals” on April 23 via Metallica’s Blackened Recordings. Recorded in multiple locations, including Los Angeles, Paris and Oahu, the label describes the collection as “an invitation to inner worlds accessible only by music and the psyche it fuels.”

The song titles are “Maiden and the Monster,” “The Jinn,” “High Plains Drifter” and “The Incantation.” The latter two tracks were co-written with Edwin Outwater, who conducted the San Francisco Symphony during its collaboration with Metallica at the grand opening of San Francisco’s Chase Center for the “S&M2” concerts.

The EP also features contributions from drummers Jon Theodore and Abraham Laboriel, bass player Greg Fidelman, Emmy-winning arranger Blake Neely, and Metallica producer Bob Rock.
